The Eastbourne Forest Rangers (EFR) was formed in the mid-1930s to carry out conservation work in the hills above the eastern bays of Te Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington Harbour).
EFR’s involvement on conservation work continues but the organisation also has undergone a series of changes while still retaining its underlying informality. Its most significant activity is now volunteer ranger work on Matiu/Somes Island.
EFR assists the Department of Conservation (DOC) with meeting ferries arriving at Matiu/Somes Island, carrying out biosecurity checks, providing an EFR Ranger to stand-in for DOC staff when required, and carrying out guided tours of the island.
EFR is a small but vibrant group of people who value EFR’s informality and the important work it does on behalf of local IWI (owners of the island) DOC (the managers). They always looking for more volunteers who enjoy meeting people and working outdoors.
