On 4 September 2016, a diving petrel was caught on the fluttering shearwater colony. They have not been recorded on Matiu/Somes Island before.  The sound system playing fluttering shearwater calls each night also has a few diving petrel calls on it so this may have attracted this bird into the colony.  It was caught again in October and banded so we will know in the future if it is seen again.

Diving petrels breed on other islands in Cook Strait including Trio, Brothers and Stephens islands.  They are one of three species of seabirds successfully translocated to Mana Island.  Maybe they are suitable for translocating to Matiu/Somes Island in the future!!
